Bark participated in an architecture competition inviting Australian architects to design a new gallery and exhibition space for Australian art, to be used for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012 in Japan.

The theme of this year’s National Architecture Conference is ‘Experience’ and is being hosted in Brisbane for the first time in 24 years. Bark directors, Stephen Guthrie and Lindy Atkin, along with architect John Mainwaring have ‘curated’ the Sunshine Coast Residential tour for the Australian Institute of Architects.

Aptly titled ‘Practice on the Coast Edge’, Bark directors Lindy & Steve participated in the Asia Pacific Design Library Lecture Series 2012 and explored how Bark’s residential and community projects represent a sharp contemporary development of a distinctive coastal architecture, reviewing the journey of 18 of our projects.

Bark Design Architects have created a gateway with a difference: a delightfully welcoming, precisely crafted urban green space where the built form sits equally and carefully nestled within a natural endemic landscape.

The brief was to create a private oasis, retreat – style home that could easily be closed up when the owners returned interstate, yet would have all the hallmarks of an authentic beach house.

Visiting a book store, the ‘light box’ on the front cover caught Steve’s attention, then recognising it as a Bark Design project!

Originally designed by Bark for a young family in 2002, the original premise of the house was economy, durability and simplicity. A change of ownership in 2009 provided an opportunity to exlpore its design flexibility to suit the requirements of its new owners.

The house is a series of steeped platforms that enable a contemporary coastal lifestyle to unfold within a very special coastal landscape.
